Ashoka the Hero is a 2011 Indian animated film written and directed by Gaurav Jain. Synopsis
The film tells the story of Ashoka, an eight-year-old boy whose policeman father was killed during a bank robbery. His protective mother keeps him housebound and his only friends are his dog Buddy and his mysterious neighbour Masa. Masa is the keeper of Emperor Asoka's medallion of power, which was created after the destructive war of Kalinga as a way to save mankind from itself. Masa leaves the medallion to Ashoka and this makes him a superhero. As a superhero, Ashoka must ensure that he never misuses his powers, for if he does, he will lose them. The rest of the story is how Ashoka loses his powers and then faces grave danger and saves thousands of lives, thus becoming a true hero.

Release and Reception
The film was released in theatres on 7 January 2011 but got only 25 prints. The film grossed an estimated 3 lakh (US$3,800) at the box office, against a budget of 1.5 crore (US$190,000) and was declared as a "disaster" by boxofficeindia. The film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences, who praised the animation quality and the message of the film, but criticized the weak plot and the lack of originality .

The film is inspired by the life and teachings of Emperor Asoka, who ruled most of India from 268 to 232 BCE and was known for his policy of non-violence and religious tolerance after converting to Buddhism.
The film features a cameo appearance by Amitabh Bachchan, who voices himself as a narrator in the beginning of the film.
The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 58th National Film Awards in 2011, but lost to Chillar Party.
